Breastfeeding Essentials

Hello New Mommies or Mommies-to-be,

This post is just to share with you a little about breastfeeding essentials or what you need to buy and prepare before the little one arrives.. This is 100% based on my own experience & no sponsors or whatever here.. I'm here to share and hope my fellow breastfeeding mommies or mommies to be who plan to breastfeed their babies will find it useful, yeah? :)

I have been breastfeeding my baby boy for 8 months & I wrote quite a bit here and there about my breastfeeding journey, so far, I found breastfeeding is very rewarding & breast milk is the best gift I can provide to my baby boy.. Looking him growing up so well, I just feel happy & proud of myself :)

Here are my breastfeeding essentials/kits:

1) Pregnancy/Breastfeeding Pillow

Mine is called "Big Floppy" This pillow can be used during pregnancy (for better support during sleeping especially when you need to sleep on your left side) and breastfeeding/nursing your baby.

At 8 months old, I stopped direct latching because he kept biting during nursing and it hurt, oh boy! but I still use this pillow during milk pumping.. I love to put my Ipad on top of this nursing pillow, browse Facebook or watch YouTube while expressing my milk..  (I pump on my bed, so I absolutely need this!)

I found breastfeeding pillow useful during early months, especially when I wasn't that good in carrying & nursing him at the same time.. And when my arms felt sore, this pillow provided good support. However, as he grew older, I was actually able to manage to breastfeed him without nursing pillow :)

2) Ipad

Merely for entertainment.. It's gonna be boring to just sit down & pump for 20-30 minutes.

3) Breast Pump and Lots of Bottles for milk storage

I'm using Medela freestyle double electric pump and so far, it's the best! It's super effective to clear milk & produce the amount my baby needs for exclusive breast milk

I bought lots of Medela bottles too for milk storage.. I have 7 bottles in total. My baby is fed fresh breast milk only and no frozen breast milk... So, 7 bottles are enough!

4) Tissues

Oh, yeah, I need lots of these to wipe a little milk here and there.. You will know what I mean!

5) Water

Breastfeeding makes me extra thirsty, so water is a must during milk pumping.. I drink 3 liter of water a day during breastfeeding.. Less water, less milk!

6) Pump Bra

Mine is from this brand, "Simple Wishes" and I have 2 of these bras, one in pink and another one in black :) and so far, it helps me so much and I can't pump milk without this..  This brand provides extra security, so no leaking at all and I can produce good amount too. Basically, when I have this bra on, I can have my both hands to do other things such as reading magazine, playing games on Ipad or even doing my make-up.. Totally hands-free! The best innovation ever! A-Must-Buy, mommies!!

7) Nipple Cream

Mine is from MotherCare and 100% pure lanolin. This makes my nipples much better, it heals dryness & cracks. It's also safe for my baby to nurse after I put this nipple cream on.. My suggestion is if you want to buy nipple cream, make sure that it's safe for baby consumption (or you don't need to wash prior feeding)

8) Mother's Milk Tea

The best lactating tea ever.. I drank this tea to increase my milk supply and oh, man, it worked like wonder.. I was able to pump 900 ml a day. I drank this tea 2 times a day and stopped when my supply was enough :)

9) BlackMores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold

I have 2 capsules a day. I like this brand because besides it has all the vitamins & minerals my baby needs, it contains fish oil/omega too.. Fish Oil/Omega is good for brain development.. Basically, I drink this, so my breast milk contains enough vitamins, omega, iron, etc for my baby's development :)

These are optional items:

10) Nursing Shirt.

I bought it but I never wore it to nurse my baby.. I didn't feel comfortable to nurse him outside, instead he had expressed milk in a bottle when we were outside!

11) Nursing Cover

I bought this too but I found I was wasting money as I never nursed him outside.. I used it inside the house though, when my relatives were at my house & I needed to breastfeed him in the living room.. I also used this when I needed to pump milk in other places, other than my room.

12) Cotton Buds

What is this for?

I use this to clean my nipples! I'm pumping milk instead of direct latching, so I got lots of these dirty white stuff on my nipples, look like dried milk or something. Just wet cotton bud and clean it! I personally think it's important to keep nipples clean to prevent blockage!

It's optional, you can use clean cloth to clean nipples too :) but I like this!

For direct latching, I absolutely didn't need this.. Baby's mouth is super effective to clean nipples and clear milk blockage :)

Here he is, my breastfed baby boy :)

Absolutely healthy & growing up well. At 8 months old, he's able to walk while holding into sofa or play yard gates. An excellent development for his age!

Happy Breastfeeding, mommies!! Just drop me an email @ netty_lie83@hotmail.com if you want to ask me anything everything under the sun regarding breastfeeding.. I hope my experience can help yeah :)

(Sponsored) Root Touch Up + Hair Treatment at J7 Image Art of Hair & GIVEAWAYS

Hello Gorgeous People,

Have you had your hair fixed for this festive season?

I had, thanks to J7 Image Art of Hair for inviting me to their salon for root touch up (My dark hair had grown a little and the root was much darker than my brown hair, so touching up is a must). Besides, the touch-up, I had my hair treated with organic hair treatment too which is great!

The hair color products they used on me were the same technology they used previously on my hair.. It is the ODS2 Technology or it's also called as Oil Delivery System. It's a breakthrough oil-based delivery system that maximizes the effectiveness of the coloration system and helps respect the natural protective outer layer of hair... This hair color product & technology contains no ammonia, so it is super safe for pregnant & breastfeeding mommies :) and you can read more my experience getting my hair color done using this technology here :)

My hair stylist, Andy was in charge of getting my root done beautifully :) (Notice that the salon is decorated beautifully for Christmas?)

Half done :) Coloring in progress :) No ammonia smell at all.. I feel super safe (since I'm a breastfeeding mommy) & comfortable :) My scalp felt good too (It didn't irritate my scalp at all)

Done & waiting to rinse it off ^^

I was pretty much done with my root coloring and it was time for hair treatment.. For more product information & my experience getting my hair treated organically, read more here (I wrote about it previously) and this time round, J7 Image used the very new hair treatment technology on me.

The new technology (as you can see below, Andy was spraying it on my hair) is called Nano Mist.

J7 Image's stylist, Andy explained to me it's easier for Nano Mist technology to absorb hair product because the mist is much smaller than normal steamer.

Basically this baby allows the nanometer hydrone of about 0.26nm to permeate the internal hair, fully rehydrating and moisturizing the hair and promotes the chemical reaction as well. It ejects nanometer water molecules with potential heat energy which can smoothly pass the hair cuticle whose gap can be small as 1nm. Results? Repairing & strengthening and Rehydrating hair :) Awesome??

I had my hair done, root coloring with hair treatment... Nice? (It's me with J7 Image's talented stylist, Jeft)

I super adore my hair color now, it suits my fair complexion very much, so I look more warm-fair (with brown hair) instead of pale-fair (with dark hair previously)

I also love Jeft's blonde hair too :)

Christmas Giveaways from Fisher-Price

Ho Ho Ho Mamas & Papas,

Christmas is coming in a few weeks time, can you believe that?

I have been extremely busy with my baby boy and I didn't even know it's already Christmas time... (Am I getting old or simply becoming more forgetful due to sleepless nights taking care a fussy baby?) I just lost count of days and months since he came into my life :D

A few Sundays ago, we went to Orchard road and I remember asking my husband stupidly "Why are there so many beautiful decorated but unlighted lights along Orchard road?" He stoned and then answered "Don't you remember Christmas is coming soon?" Oh-Uh, he was right, Christmas's coming! Oh Silly Me!

My poor memory proves how much my son means to me. He means the whole world in his mommy's eyes :)

This year's Christmas is a special one and going to be our first Christmas celebration with our  precious son. Previous Christmas is very clear in my mind, I was 6 months pregnant last Christmas and I remember telling my husband I need to look as pretty as possible for Christmas because once our son arrives in this world, there will be no time to dress up nicely and absolutely no time to put on 30 minute make-up!

It was pretty true, he arrived and I just gave up my passion in beauty (oh well, not entirely, I'm still writing beauty related posts here and there). To me, my son is my real beauty! :)

My special Christmas is not only to be celebrated with my family, but with my blog readers too :) That means what? Yes, that's right! Christmas Giveaways from Fisher-Price

My Skin Care Routine Update ~ Dec'13

(This post is not sponsored at all)

Wonder what is my daily skin care routine look like as a mommy of a 7 month old baby?

Here's what I'm currently using right now :)

Day

1) Bio-Essence Spring Water. Find this very good to freshen my dull face :)
2) Garnier Light Brightening Eye Roll-on. My dark circles and puffy eyes are so bad, that's another blessed risk as a full time mom taking care a baby who wakes up 2 times midnight. I just bought this recently & I hope it really works yah :)
3) Hada Labo SHA Hydrating Light Lotion. My skin has been so sensitive lately. Before using this lotion together with Hada Labo essence, my skin was pretty bad, I think it was due to sleeping in air-con room every night. I had red & dry patches on my cheeks and tiny bumpy spots (kind like acnes but I'm pretty sure, it's not acne. I think the cause of it is again my super dry skin)
4) Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moist Essence Ex. This is the last step I use on my face. Use this after spring water, eye roll-on & light lotion.
5) Kiel's Lip Balm

Short review about Hada-Labo SHA Hydrating Light Lotion & Moist Essence Ex.

After using both for 1 week, my dry skin has improved a lot. No more dry skin, no more tiny bumpy stuff on my face.. My face is super soft & super moisturized. Hada-Labo essence is perfect for day time where the weather is hot. This essence is not oily, absorbed quick & leaves a super soft moisturized effect on skin.. Great!!

Night:

(same products I use for day time except I replace Hada Labo Essence with Hada Labo Gokujyun cream at night)
1) Bio-Essence Spring Water
2) Garnier Light Brightening Eye Roll-on
3) Hada Labo SHA Hydrating Light Lotion
4) Hada Labo Gokujyun Cream. This cream is so great for super dry skin like mine.. I have been using it for more than a week and I'm no longer have super dry skin.. Great to use if you have dry skin & you sleep in air-con room, I recommend this! No more bumpy thingy on my skin too :) I only use this at night because this cream is pretty thick and I sweat a lot taking care a hyper active baby in the afternoon, so not suitable for me to use in the afternoon. However, when I was having dry red patches on my cheeks, I applied this cream (very lightly) on the affected area and within 2 days, my dry red patches were gone! Great remedy for flaky skin :)
5) Kiel's Lip Balm

As a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom), I don't have luxury time to put so much stuff on my skin.. So, it's important to have 1 or 2 effective products I can both use day and night for less than 2 minutes each application.. I'm talking about saving time here :)

Take a good care of your skin, mommies (or non-mommies) ^^

White Nectarine Puree

Any mommies tried white nectarine puree for dearest babies before?

I tried and until now, I'm confused & unsure if he really likes it or hates it, hahaha!

My little one's face showed he was so disgusted by the taste but his mouth acted otherwise.. He ate it (almost finished though) but just his face showed hatred towards white nectarine :D

Nectarines and Peaches are pretty much the same fruits, just that there's no fuzz on nectarine skin. Both fruits are high in Vitamin A and C and contain a great amount of fiber. Good for constipation!

White Nectarine Puree (6 months +)

1) Pick 2 small sized white nectarines (mine is Australian grown). Wash, Peel and Cut into pieces

 2) Steam it for 20 minutes

My freshly steamed nectarine

3) Remove the steamed water but don't throw the precious water away. The puree is going to be very watery if you don't remove the steamed water (Nectarine has high water content)

4) Use the steamed water to mix with Frisocrem wheat-based milk cereal. This is absolutely optional. I prefer to mix with a little bit of wheat-based milk cereal, so my nectarine puree tastes sweeter (some nectarines can be a little sour, although some are sweet). My boy loves sweet taste and there's no way he wants to eat sour puree :D

5) Blend steamed nectarine after you remove the steamed water from your blender

6) Mix wheat cereal mixture with blended nectarine. Stir well

7) Ready & Feed the baby!

He showed this funny face when he was eating nectarine or peach puree.. Face expression & mouth showed otherwise, hahaha!!

Salmon + Carrot + Wheat Cereal Puree

Mamas, do you know Salmon contains DHA that is very important for baby's brain and eye development? and Carrot contains essential vitamins that are very important to improve baby's intestinal health?

How about to combine the power of orange food together to make baby's super food?

Salmon smells a little fishy and it's good to combine something sweet like carrot or sweet potato to balance out the whole fishy smell. Plus sweet vegetables such as carrot and sweet potato increase my boy's appetite :)

Let's try Salmon + Carrot + Wheat Cereal Puree for your little one :)

My baby boy loves this recipe and I hope your baby enjoys too :)

Salmon + Carrot + Wheat Cereal Puree (7 months +)

1) Prepare 2 pcs of Salmon (about 3cm * 3cm per pcs). For the size, it's optional, you can prepare a bigger piece if you'd like to :) I normally buy my Salmon at supermarket, cut it into pieces and put inside ziplock bags and store it inside freezer :)

Then, prepare 1/2 carrot (medium size). If possible, buy premium carrots, it's much sweeter.. Baby carrots are very sweet too :)

2) Soak frozen salmon in cold water for 10 minutes (to defrost it) before steaming it

3) Cut half carrot into small pieces

4) Steam salmon & carrot for 20 minutes (I used Avent 2 in 1 blender & steamer)

5) Pour half of the steamed water from steaming salmon & carrot into a bowl.  Don't throw away that precious steamed water, it's super nutritious and we are going to use it again later to mix baby's wheat cereal. The reason is if you don't remove half of the steamed water, it's going to be very watery when you blend.

6) Blend both steamed salmon & carrot. Of course, add more water if the blended salmon + carrot consistency is too thick. Adjust accordingly! Blend until salmon + carrot mixture looks pretty much like porridge :)

7) Remember the steamed water you pour into a bowl (step no. 5) ? Use that super nutritious steamed water to mix your wheat or rice cereal. I use Frisocrem wheat-based milk cereal. Feel free to use other brands too as long as your baby likes it, mommy! ^^

8) Add salmon & carrot mixture into wheat cereal mixture. Stir well!

My salmon & carrot + wheat cereal mixture

9) Serve the baby!

He likes it :)

More??

Yummy!

Avocado + Egg Yolk + Wheat Cereal Puree

Mamas,

Have you tried Avocado + Egg Yolk + Wheat Cereal Puree for your baby?

I tried and my baby quite liked it! :)

Avocado + Egg Yolk contain DHA which is very important in brain development. Providing an adequate amount of these nutrients will assist cognitive development at baby's crucial stage in life :)

Mashed egg yolks are safe for babies below 1 year old and after 1 year old, it's alright to introduce egg whites too.. I read that egg whites should be avoided if babies are below 1 year old due to allergy & high protein reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Avocado + Egg Yolk + Wheat Cereal Puree (6 months + )

1) Pick one ripe avocado, blend it and add warm water to get into puree consistency. Puree consistency looks smooth like yogurt!

2) Prepare 2 tbsp. of Frisocrem wheat-based milk cereal with warm water. You can choose other brands too as long as your baby likes it :)

3) Boil an egg in water and remove egg yolk and mash. I normally use half egg yolk.

4) Mix wheat cereal mixture with blended avocado and add mashed egg yolk. Stir well!

5) Ready & Serve! This recipe is very simple, yet very nutritious for baby :)

Making Baby Food: Broccoli + Peas + Wheat Cereal Purees

Fellow Mommies,

I have one new recipe to share. I'm making super simple yet very healthy food for baby EJ: Brocolli + Peas + Wheat Cereal Purees :)

If you want to know more baby recipes I have been making for my little boy, here's the LINK

How to prepare:

1) Using my Avent baby food maker (the one does both steaming & blending), I steam broccoli (about 1/2 cup, only florets, discard stem) and peas (about 2 tbsp.) for 20 minutes

Look at my nicely steamed broccoli & peas. If you go to NTUC/supermarket to get broccoli, it's best to choose Australian grown broccoli. I'm not sure why but baby EJ prefers Australian grown broccoli. I tried Chinese grown broccoli previously and he didn't like it as much as Australian grown broccoli.. What a smart baby, he's all about the quality & great taste! For the peas, I used frozen peas but make sure you leave it at room temperature for a while (kind of defrosting it) before steaming it!

2) Blend it! It's best to blend for a little longer because peas can be a little difficult for my baby to swallow. It's the outer shell, perhaps?

3) Prepare 3 tbsp. of Frisocrem wheat-based milk rice cereal. Mix with warm water and add broccoli and pea mixture and stir well

P/S: first time moms, in case you aren't sure how much water to mix. You can mix cereal with warm water until the mixture looks as smooth as yogurt. That's the right consistency.. Just add a little water first, stir then add a little water again, stir until your cereal has the perfect yogurt consistency (not too dry but not too watery too! )

My son absolutely loves Frisocrem wheat-based milk rice cereal because it tastes sweet! He simply appreciates sweet taste! I personally think wheat is healthy for my growing baby because wheat is rich in carbohydrates and vitamin B to provide more energy for my baby to grow!

The soluble fibre in beans (such as peas) absorb water to soften solid waste and contains probiotic helps to fight against harmful bacteria in the digestive system. (Info credited from Frisocrem booklet)

Dark green vegetables (such as broccoli, spinach, etc) contain plenty of magnesium. Dark Green veggies help to strengthen teeth and bones for my little one :)

Broccoli + Peas = Perfect Combination.. Yes, mommies??

4) Done and ready to serve the little prince!

The prince is waiting!

First Spoon of healthy greens :)

Yum Yum Yum...

He wants more!

Gimme more!!

My prince enjoyed my healthy recipe!

I hope your prince or princess enjoy my recipe too and until next sharing,

(Sponsored) Product Trial & Review: Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Breast Pump

Hello Fellow Mommies,

Breast milk is the best gift a mother can give to her baby and I have been giving this special gift to my little one for the past 7 months. My baby has been growing outstandingly well, at 7 months old, my little one can stand up firmly on his little toes and move little steps, either right or left.. Yes, he's learning to walk at a very young age and to me, as a breastfeeding mommy, it's one of my biggest achievements and his biggest milestone as an exclusively breastfed baby..

Breast milk is undoubtedly the best nutrition I can provide to my baby boy.. It's healthy and very natural. I truly believe human milk is designed for human baby :) My 7 month old exclusively breastfed baby weighs 9.8 kg & he's 74 cm long. He's huge, strong & absolutely healthy! Thanks to breast milk!

As a breastfeeding mother, a breast pump is my best friend and I can't imagine myself living without a breast pump.. In other words, breast pump is my little secret obsession and absolutely the best gadget I ever owned. I would rather live without a smart phone than living without a breast pump because it generates liquid gold for my little one :)

Thanks to Mothercare for giving me the opportunity to try & review the newly improved Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Breast Pump. Here I am to share with fellow breastfeeding mommies my experience using Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Breast Pump :)

The Closer to Nature Single Electric Breast Pump is specially designed to mimic a baby’s natural feeding action, for excellent results at the touch of a button.

(Product info credited from Tomme Tippee website)

Included free inside: 1) Microwave sterilizer-box. sterilize and store breastfeeding equipment in one compact box. 2) Milk Storage Pot. 3) Feeding Bottle. Closer to nature 150 ml bottle with breast like slow flow silicone teat. 4) Breast Pads

I'm a big fan of Tommee Tippee products, so I couldn't wait to try it out the moment this breast pump landed in my room. I washed & sterilized immediately and to my surprise, this breast pump was very easy to assemble.. No Fussy-Hussy at all!! I was able to assemble this breast pump completely and of course correctly in just less than 5 minutes.. It was really that efficient!

The Tommee Tippee soft silicone cup is super comfortable and what I like the most from this soft silicone cup is it offers me the extra security. The milk didn't stuck in between the breast shield and soft silicone cup and it didn't go out of place. I didn't need to re-adjust either!

I have tried many soft silicone cups from different famous brands, although it offered the comfort I wanted but it wasn't secure at all or I needed to adjust and re-adjust many times during my pumping session and yes it was annoying!

The Tommee Tippee soft silicone cup is the best I have ever tried :) Although at the beginning, I needed to master how to put this in place correctly. Since it offers extra security, it can be little hard to attach this soft silicone cup into the breast shield. Practice makes perfect! and it's now getting easier and easier for me to fix this soft silicone cup into the right place :)

There are 4 settings to choose from: light, low, medium and high. Personally 'high' was the setting I preferred and it didn't hurt at all. I felt comfortable with the 'high' setting and I have been on 'high' since the first time I used this breast pump.. So far, no injured nipples! Yay!! :)

I loved how super gentle the milk expression was, although I was on 'high' setting. The milk flow from the expression was very fast too.. (As you can see from the picture, took this picture when I was pumping!)

I was super amazed with my pumping result!! I successfully expressed 90 ml of breast milk in just 5 minutes (one breast) What a super efficient breast pump!!

15 minutes later, I successfully expressed 150 ml of breast milk (one breast).. It's already my son's one feeding expressed in just 15 minutes :) It took me about 30 minutes to express from both breasts, about 250 ml in total (150 ml from right breast & 100 ml from left breast).

I normally pump the fullest breast first which is always on my right side, then store the milk in the milk storage pot and continue to pump the left side.

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Breast Pump is one of my favorite breast pumps (I own a few breast pumps) Super efficient, fast milk flow & very comfortable. I just wish it's a double electric breast pump! It would be great to pump 2 breasts at the same time because it would be absolutely wonderful to save 15 minutes of my precious time to spend with my little one :)

Nonetheless, I'm happy with this product!

Another great thing is the microwave sterilizer box. I can wash my breast pump parts, store everything inside the box and easily sterilize it in the microwave!

Take it out from microwave after being sterilized and here I go, ready for my next pumping again!

I hope other mommas who try Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Breast Pump are as happy as me too :)
